Impregnation or Coating: Which to Choose

This is one of the most common questions when protecting surfaces. Impregnation and coating protect differently and give a different look, so the right choice starts with understanding the difference. We break down both options so you decide with your eyes open.

Two different philosophies of protection

Put simply, a penetrating impregnation protects from the inside, a coating from the outside. The first sinks into the material and works in its structure, the second forms a thin film on the surface. Almost everything else follows from this difference, from the look to the way of refreshing.

How a penetrating impregnation works

The impregnation sinks into the pores of the material and limits its water absorption, without visibly changing the look. The surface stays matt and natural, and the protection works deep down. This is the solution for anyone who cares about protection without changing the character of pavers, stone or render.

How a water repellent coating works

The coating forms a thin film on the surface that acts as a barrier and often deepens the colour and creates the wet look. This is the choice for anyone who cares about emphasising the colour and an extra layer on top.

Comparison in practice

  • Look. The impregnation keeps the natural, matt effect. The coating deepens the colour and creates the wet look.
  • Type of protection. The impregnation protects from the inside, the coating forms a barrier on the surface.
  • Refreshing. The coating, as the top layer, usually wears off faster in high traffic areas.
  • Slip resistance. With coatings on walked surfaces it is worth checking the slip resistance in the product description.
  • Highlighting dirt. The coating shows more of what stays under it, so cleanliness has double importance with it.

Tip

If you want only protection and a natural look, choose an impregnation. If you want to emphasise the colour and get the wet look, choose a coating. The product description usually states clearly which effect it gives. More on the wet look is in the guide on the wet look on pavers.

Which to choose for the specific task

  • A natural look of pavers, stone or render. A penetrating impregnation.
  • A strong, deep colour and wet look. A coating.
  • A facade, where the wall needs to breathe. A breathable facade impregnation.
  • Walked and driven surfaces. Check, regardless of the type, whether the product is intended for this.

The most common misunderstandings

The most common mistake is expecting the wet look from an impregnation that is not meant to change the look. The second is the belief that a coating is always better because it forms a visible layer. Both products are good, just for different purposes.

Remember too that the name on the pack does not always decide the action. Always check in the description whether the product penetrates or forms a film and which effect it gives. See also the guide on common impregnation mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

What creates the wet look, impregnation or coating?

The wet look is created by a coating that forms a thin film on the surface and deepens the colour. A penetrating impregnation does not change the look.

Is a coating more durable than an impregnation?

Not necessarily. The coating is a top layer that usually wears off faster in high traffic areas and needs refreshing. The impregnation works in the depth of the material. The durability of specific products is given on their data sheets.

Can I apply a coating over an impregnation?

It depends on the products and the material. Do not mix different products on your own. If you are considering such a solution, check the guidance of both manufacturers.

Which product is better?

Neither is universally better. The impregnation wins where a natural look and protection from the inside matter, the coating where the wet look and a top layer are what counts.
