How to Impregnate Natural Stone Step by Step

Natural stone is beautiful, but sometimes temperamental. Different stone types absorb differently and react differently to products, so when protecting natural stone, care and a test matter more than anywhere else. We show how to approach it with sense.

Why natural stone requires special care

Natural stone is a very varied material. Sandstone absorbs differently from granite, and light marble reacts differently from dark stone. Even the same batch can differ in absorbency from one element to another. For this reason there is no single recipe for all stone, and the test before the work becomes all the more important.

A product on stone can not only protect but also change the look, above all deepen the colour. On light and sensitive stone you should check this especially carefully.

What you impregnate natural stone for

  • Limiting water absorption, and outdoors also better frost resistance.
  • Lower susceptibility to stains, which matters on worktops, sills and floors.
  • Easier care and slower soiling.
  • On facades and fences of stone, slower growth and fewer streaks.

Stone indoors and outdoors

Stone indoors, for example worktops, sills and floors, is protected mainly against moisture and stains, including greasy ones. Stone outdoors, that is facades, fences and surfaces, must additionally stand up to water, sun and frost. So choosing the product starts with the question of where the stone is.

Tip

For stone in the kitchen and bathroom, check the product description for resistance to stains and contact with water. For outdoor stone, resistance to weather matters.

Preparing the stone

The stone must be clean, dry and free of old coatings. Dirt and stains are removed before impregnation, because the product seals them in. The general rules of surface preparation we describe in the guide on preparing the surface, and rule number one with stone is, first the test.

Impregnating natural stone step by step

  1. 1
Do a test in an inconspicuous spot. This is the most important step with stone. You check the absorbency and a possible colour change before you tackle the whole surface.
  2. 2
Clean and dry the surface. Remove dirt and stains and let the stone dry thoroughly.
  3. 3
Choose the product for the use. Separately for indoor and outdoor stone, according to the product description.
  4. 4
Apply the product evenly. Spread the product thinly and without puddles. Excess on the surface can leave marks.
  5. 5
Remove excess and wait. If the product requires it, wipe off the excess according to the instructions, then let the surface bond for the time stated on the data sheet.

The most common mistakes when impregnating stone

  • Skipping the test, which can be the most costly with stone.
  • Applying to damp or dirty stone.
  • Leaving excess product, which leaves stains and streaks.
  • Using an outdoor product indoors and the other way around.
  • Overlooking that light stone reacts differently from dark.

Frequently asked questions

Does the impregnation change the colour of the stone?

It can. Some products deepen the colour and give a slightly wetted stone effect, others keep the natural look. With natural stone always check this with a test, because the reaction varies a lot.

Can I protect a stone worktop or sill?

Yes, provided you choose a product for indoor stone with suitable resistance to stains and water. The surface must be clean and dry, and before the work a test is worthwhile.

How often should I refresh the stone impregnation?

The signal is the return of water absorption and a greater susceptibility to stains. The frequency depends on the use and the product, so you will find the durability on the product data sheet.

Can every stone be impregnated?

Most stones can be protected, but the reaction varies, so the test and the suitability for the given stone type described in the product data sheet decide.
